Buying The Right Disaster Preparedness Kits

By Annabelle Holman

Disasters can strike at any moment with little warning. Basic disaster preparedness kits contain the supplies necessary to immediately sustain oneself in event of such an emergency for a minimum of three days. A kit like this has to be put together in such a way as to be easily carried and thought must have gone into organization so that all items are easily accessible.

Some people choose to assemble their own kit. They feel confident that they know what to include and are prepared to shop around for quality items at good prices. Unfortunately many of us do not have the time or knowledge to do this. We prefer the convenience of being able to choose a product that has already been put together.

There are many such items available for purchase from various sources, including from many online stores. Making a decision can be quite difficult, particularly as the items contained and their quality can vary considerably. It makes sense to do some research about what it should contain before making a purchase.

Sometimes when ordering such a product, one may be disappointed to find that the items included are cheap and not worth what you paid. However, some excellent products are available too. One obviously needs to deal with a reputable supplier to avoid disappointment. Reading customer reviews about a particular product can also be helpful when making a decision.

When choosing a kit, make sure that it contains all the basic necessities for survival and that they are contained in a sturdy enough bag. It should not be too difficult to carry. Sometimes you may have to walk quite a distance and you do not want to be hindered by a pack that is too heavy and very uncomfortable.

Food and water are the primary considerations as they are essential to survival. Foodstuffs must be non-perishable and high in energy. Human beings cannot do without water and so this also has to be part of such a kit. It is usually contained in pouches. Apart from food and water, light, warmth and shelter are also considered. Heat blankets, flashlights and tents for shelter are usually included in a basic kit.

Some individuals prefer one that contains more than just essentials for surviving for a short period. Items like basic tools such as knives, ropes and axes, cooking utensils and other personal and first aid items may be included. The most comprehensive ones contain anything from water filters and cooking gear to solar panels, enabling one to live off the land for as long as necessary.

Even the most basic kit does include room for some personal items such documents, a wallet and medicine. These should always be protected in a waterproof container. A kit should be checked about every six months as certain items beyond expiry dates may need to be replaced. Everyone should own such a kit and make sure that items in it are always up-to-date. It should be just a matter of grabbing it and going in event of an emergency situation.
